What do I wear?

The answer to this is something warm and comfortable enough to be able to sit for longish periods of time without making you feel restricted. It could be something loose or something stretchy but it needs to be very comfortable.

How often do I meditate and how long for?

You can meditate as often as you want to. It could be once or twice a week, once or twice a day or even more. When you first start it will be more difficult for you and so you might only be able to do a few minutes at a time. With experience and practice you’ll be able to focus for longer and you might build up to 45 minutes or more on a daily basis.

Where do I meditate?

You can meditate anywhere as long as you feel comfortable. It would be preferable to be in a fairly quiet space, but that isn’t always possible, especially for people who live in towns and cities, or who have children or pets. As you get more experienced it will be easier to ignore sounds around you.

5 Frequently Asked Questions

What position should I sit in?

People often associate meditating with sitting rigidly upright in the Lotus position on the floor. Some people really do like meditating like that! But you can sit in a comfortable chair, or even lie down if you like. I always sit in my comfy armchair!

What if I can’t get my mind to stop thinking?

When we meditate, we are training our mind to think less and to be less busy. When we start, this is usually quite difficult but with practice we can learn to be less involved with our thoughts and to calm them, slow them down and to start to let them go. It’s perfectly normal and it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong or that you’re not doing it successfully. Meditation is the practise of bringing your mind back to the focus and it doesn’t matter how many times you have to do that. There are no goals to be achieved or targets to hit and there’s no pass or fail.
